The Difference Between Value and Price

Property Managers gather pricing throughout their careers. We bid out services. We bid out repairs. We compare prices as though that’s the total cost. 

We often unwittingly use the terms “price” and “cost” interchangeably. This is a mistake. Here’s why…

When we ask for pricing to clean a building, for example, we assume the price is what we will pay. Yet, we are mostly unaware of what went into the price.

So we get curious. We get nosey. We might even get suspicious.

Rather than focusing on the value the company brings, we get into the weeds of their business so we can be educated consumers.

What’s the labor rate? What’s your profit margin? What’s your mark-up rate?

We ask these because we mistakenly believe that price equals value. And it absolutely does not.

Value = Value

It’s better to focus less on the nickels and dimes in the price, and focus more on the value derived from the service.

No, it may not be as easy as dropping prices into a spreadsheet and letting the math do the talking.

But wouldn’t it be better if we value the entire company? 

Assuming you’re considering a reputable firm…

  • It took years to build that reputation
  • It took investment to build their platform
  • It took effort to consistently solve customer problems

Sure, there might be many variables that go into their price. But, instead of dissecting it to death, you might consider the value of the journey they took to get here.

Let’s value that for a change…rather than value a low price, and make a change for the worse.

You just might find the higher-priced services deliver better value…your time being among the most precious.
